There are some places that have so much originality; you often wonder how they started. Bazbeaux’s Pizza is one of those places, and they have quite the story. Taken from their restaurant website, Bazbeaux’s was named after a French court jester, who left France and ventured to Italy. There he became Jester to Lorenzo de Medici, and he used his creativity and whim to make excellent food for him. After Lorenzo died, it was said that Bazbeaux left with Amerigo Vespucci to America. And since then, pizza has never been the same.
But what makes this restaurant so special, in addition to it’s colorful past is its atmosphere and food. The place is incredibly casual, and you will often find your waiter in jeans and a t-shirt. However, it’s also the kind of place that let’s you get dressed up if you want. When I was there, I talked to a group of Butler alumnae who were there celebrating their friend’s birthday. They were dressed up, ready to prowl the bars after they ate some pizza. So this pizza place allows customers to come for many occasions. You could just be stopping by after a work-out or you could go on a semi-fancy date. The choice is yours.
Eclectic decorations go hand-in-hand with Bazbeaux’s laid back feel. When you first step inside, your first reaction will be: warm. It feels like you’re huddling into a warm, brick-oven stove when you open the door. This rustic, modern feel permeates the atmosphere. The décor includes mainly dark woods, comforting lighting, bright pictures, and random nick-nacks on the walls. One of the stand-out items they have, in the Broadripple location, is a large wooden wheel. The nick-nacks are good conversation pieces when you’re waiting for you food.
And luckily, you don’t have to wait too long. I was there on Saturday night, and although the place was jam-packed, it took about twenty-minutes for my pizza to come. And if you don’t want to wait, they also have carry-out and delivery. The carry-out service is also very fast—most pizzas only take 15-20 minutes to make.
So you know their history and atmosphere, but the most important thing about a restaurant is there food. And Bazbeaux’s seldom disappoints. Like their décor, they have quite the eclectic menu. Although they have your traditional toppings like pepperoni, sausage, and cheese—what makes Bazbeaux’s unique are their specialty pizzas. They have pizza tastes from all over the world—to name a few, Greek, Bayou Chicken, and Hawaiian. They even have some that are Italian specific. If you like lots of cheese try the Pizza Alla Quattro Formaggio. It has Romano, cheddar, ricotta, mozzarella, provolone, bacon, and mushrooms. If you like the Italian flavors, but not all the cheese, try the Margherita. It has fresh tomato, fresh basil, fresh garlic, and fontina cheese only. There are even Vegetarian pizzas, like the Senza Formaggio. This one has eggplant, fresh basil, grilled onion, and no cheese. You have lots of freedom to pick and choose the pizza that’s right for you, while simultaneously you can give in to some hunky, original flavors, combined and tested for the public.
